Description
Commonly known as sweet wormwood, ‘Qinghao’, Artemisia annua has been used as a staple ingredient in Chinese traditional medicine due to its numerous therapeutic properties. Artemisinin, the primary component of A. annua, has been widely used as an anti-malarial drug.
The Artemisia plant apart from artemisinin, contains other bioactives such as sesquiterpene lactones, which could have antihelminthic properties. Besides these properties, artemisinin has also been studied in a number of different disease models, such as those for rheumatoid arthritis, nephritic syndrome, pancreatitis and lupus nephritis, showing promising results.
